On this eight-track set, the Philly artist Sam Wenc’s first full-length following over a decade of sonic R&D under the Post Moves guise and his first under his real name, the pedal steel guitar is used as a tool to cast a far-flung sonic net. Together with a group of collaborators, he turns in a body of music that finds its own wonky center of gravity, using ideas from free improv, post-rock, and non-western musics as a starting but not ending point. It’s a thorny, beautiful record, with Wenc playing not just the treated pedal steel but also the banjo, guitar, vibraphone, and metallaphone. Also: cymbals and tapes. This is elusive music, existing just on the tip of the tongue, the place where language dissolves.
