Remember that one Hoobstank song with the lyrics that start with the line, “I’m not a perfect person”? No? Alright, cool. With that out of the way: Perfect Person is the new project from the Vancouver-based artist and engineer Noah Williamson and, for better or worse, it does not sound like Hoobstank. I’m guessing that most of the Nina faithful are OK with that, but with the retro cycle going the way it’s going, I think the ‘Stank’s place in the contemporary canon is shifting in real time. Either way, Perfect Person is full of sounds and vibes that should feel like a cozy blanket to anyone versed in the vernacular of internet music. Pitched-up, tweaked vocal samples live in a sonic space alongside breakbeats and house four-four boogie. It’s got guests, too—Sophia Stel, Asal Hazel, and Shye01, among others—and it’s got fibrous sonics to warm up even the dreariest Western Canadian day.
