The great Jordanian label Drowned By Locals has turned five, and to celebrate they have unfurled three volumes compiling music representative of their sprawling sound. What we are writing about today is the third and final edition, and, like the label at large, the music here makes easy taxonomy tricky. From the tactile ASMR electronica of Pan Sonic’s Ilpo Väisänen along with Natalie Beridze to the fractured, downright scary audio of Elvin Brandhi and Ruhail Qaisar to Chino Amobi’s Texas rap experiments, it’s a heavy listen, absorbing many styles, prizing strenuous sonic experimentation above all else. And those are just selections from the comp’s first seven tracks. The release ends with “Green and Glowing” by Budokan Boys, a deep-voiced missive hurled into the unknown. Here’s to another five.
