Chicago footwork crew The Era continue their hybridized approach to the genre on their new four-track EP, Let the Record Reflect. In one sweep, the collective has been able to place Chicago’s long history of rap and footwork music into a tidy box; each track has battle-tested drum programming and a lot of good-natured shit-talking. Standout tracks include “Gone,” which features Bellamy Banks and DJ Lucky and flips an almost bossa nova-style sample. “Erkz, Skates” is probably the toughest track here; it’s built for dance circles from Chicago to Tokyo. The footwork tradition is alive and well! This is timeless American music.
