On Scattered sunlight, broken glass, the London producer es.cher has come through with a solid debut project. Though it is pitched as a mixtape, the release has an album-like sense of sonic continuity. There are processed, chopped vocals. There are seraphic indie rock guitars. There are one or two breakbeats. It’s in conversation with forward-thinking pop rock bands—Horse Vision comes to mind—as much as it calls back, tangentially, to styles ranging from trip-hop to indietronica to emo rap. Some of the best moments on the mixtape happen when the music bursts out of the clouds and lets a little chaos in—the conclusion of “Luna,” comes to mind; the brisker tempo of the track after that, “easy to forget.,” is satisfying, too—and point to a possible new pathway for the artist to explore. You got the coffee shop on lock, no doubt. But the kids in the pit need some attention.
