Sophie Weil is a strong force in the current LA music scene, from running her label Dove Cove to booking at the city’s premier alternative music venue Zebulon (whose Wythe Ave location in Williamsburg is sorely missed—traitors!), but one of her strongest suits is her solo project Syko Friend, premiering here a new track, “Cloudy Yellow Star Pollen.”
The song is a drumless yet guitar-driven tap tempo delayed-out minor key dirge with sultry and raw vocals floating over pulsing and repetitive Frippertronica. The deadpan vocal delivery is reminiscent of her friends Odwalla1221, while the noisy yet consonant pop-approaching song trope obviously owes much to Geffen era Sonic Youth, but also sits well alongside her other friends—and friends of Nina—Angels in America.
