ROMCOM, the new album from the Helsinki artist Pykäri, starts out with what sounds like samples taken from YouTube love advice videos. It’s a fitting intro to an indietronica record that has more than a bit of romance to it. Look, people, I would be capping if I told you I knew what Pykäri was singing about—I do not know Finnish—but I know what my ears hear. And my ears hear a record whose title is instructive. On ROMCOM, I hear the past decade of digital-native pop, the long history of Scandi electro pop, and the glitchy sound of 2000s twee electronic pop. I hear a lot of pop, and I hear a record that should be the soundtrack to your next meet-cute, wherever that may be. The hardware store?
