The American junglist massive has assembled! Stateside Jungle Vol. 1 is a new compilation presented by Irish-born, Brooklyn-based selector Don-Ri and the Twist crew. The release runs 14 tracks deep and serves as a proper roll call of the country’s underground jungle scene. From Boston legend Dev/Null to Nashville’s Ontology and Birmingham’s SWAP MEET!, stretching out West to Seattle (Quaad), Oakland (M27, Soeneido, Solox), and Long Beach (BC Rydah), the breadth of geography represented speaks volumes about the genre’s vitality in America.
Listening through the comp, you can really feel the dual nature of jungle. It’s nostalgic and rooted in its UK sound system origins, but it still holds so much untapped potential, both in the music itself and in the spaces it soundtracks. A standout for me is Brooklyn vet Krugah’s “Unsolicited Practices”—a heads-down breakbeat workout with spacey pads and a dub-tinged lead floating just at the edges. On the flip side of the jungle spectrum, Poisonfrog’s “Its Over” takes a mid-2000s sample you will probably recognize and tosses it in a hardcore jungle blender.
