London duo The Twins are actual brothers who whip up a compelling fusion of the South Asian music they were raised on and the hyper-contemporary sounds of British rap and dance. In practice, this means chopped-up Bollywood samples colliding with crushed beats that wouldn’t feel out of place on a Fakemink record. It’s a potent brew, no doubt about that. And the duo’s DJ sets, too, smash up styles; they are some of the most exciting mixes I have heard in quite some time. It was only a matter of time until I hit their line to learn more. Growing up together, did you develop your musical tastes in tandem? Can you remember some important early moments of musical discovery?

The Twins: 90 percent of our music taste developed in tandem I feel. I remember our first live shows we went to, sneaking in when we were 14/15, opened our eyes to some lifelong favorites. 

You’ve called your sound “Bollywood electronic.” What does that term mean to you?

A lot of TURMERIC was us learning a culture that was meant to be our own from the start. It’s really just us trying to show our influences and what we represent. 

Where do you see The Twins fitting in within the larger history of South Asian underground music in England?

No idea lol, hopefully cool?

Your DJ style is quite eclectic, though within parameters. Are there any styles or tracks you don’t agree on? Have you been able to change each other’s minds?

Jamal is always listening to different radios from all over the place. Each of our taste is pretty vast and expanding but we always seem to agree what potent music is.

What's the funniest thing that has happened on the dancefloor during one of your DJ sets? 

Our family doesn’t know we do music. Very halal family. DJing One night at Corsica and I see our cousin in the crowd mad faded. Made a mutual agreement of secrecy that night. I shouted her out ‘cos she just got proposed to. Was funny and wholesome.

How did “MATTRESS” come together? 

The reason it sounds so choppy is because it was originally a different song but was fully chopped up for the final version with new drums put over it. Started it before The Twins was even a project.

Could you talk a bit about your visual art practice?

Us and Arran (Arran Ashan) work together on this. It’s always done similar to the music, trying to portray the world as we wish it was but simplified to a few small strong signifiers.
