Snippets of this song popped up on my roommate's feed and then he showed me so they started popping up on my feed and now the song is out and Lamb's IG follower count is skyrocketing. The online buzz surrounding a conventionally attractive young woman making Tiktok videos isn't surprising. But other facets of "Overkill" certainly are.
1. The cover art looks like something that would be put out on Julia's War, and I'd bet money that whoever drew this image used Feeble Little Horse tour fliers as reference materials.
2. I texted several friends asking who Lamb's voice reminds them of. I got several "hmmm"'s and one "Lucy Dacus, kind of," which is who I also thought she resembles. I know there's someone I can't think of who's a closer match, though.
3. I haven't thought it through enough yet but between this song -- white girl gently burbling over a padded jerk beat -- and that Lightris song that's also going viral at the moment -- white dude imitating Bladee over a Milwaukee low-end beat -- there's something in the air right now.
4. I think this song is good in the sense that it's catchy and the contrast between her voice and the beat is somewhat novel. But I don't think this song is actually Good. I've listened to it many times and only find myself going back to analyze it critically, not because I think it's enjoyable to listen to. Like so much Tiktok-era music, it's both immediate and fleeting. "Oh, that's cool" and then seconds later "meh, maybe not." Empty calorie pop music.
