Last year, the Danish multi-instrumentalist, producer, and songwriter J. Ludvig III released an album called EMOTAN. Not one for false advertising, the record leans into certain stylistic hallmarks of the emo music Ludvig listened to as a kid. Now it’s 2025, and there is a remix album to go along with it. Though the remixes here—it features turns from the Chicago experimental mainstay Fire-Toolz and the Philly producer Flanaf, among many producers—display a wide range of contemporary experimental and electronic music styles, there is a paucity of “proper emo” to be found. If you are looking for something that sounds like in-store music at a 2000s Hot Topic, or something that could’ve played in D.C. in the mid-to-late 80s, look elsewhere. But for fans of forward-pushing electronic music, it’s a great listen—and a nice complement to the artist’s original record. Also, never forget: emo comes in many forms.
