God’s Mom is a collaboration between the Canadian artist Bria Salmena and the producer and filmmaker A. Matthews. Their new record As It Was Given is a collection of pounding, ethereal dance cuts, anchored by Salmena’s vocals, which take cues from Italian singing traditions as much as anything within contemporary house, techno, or industrial. “They sound far more raw than any punk singer I had ever heard,” Salmena said of the vocalists on the Italian recordings she has been studying, which are mostly from the 1930s through the 1960s.
