What and who is Musicellectuals?
OLDHEAD: Group of friends who love to post and have fun :).
C: Yeah what oldhead said.
Music enjoyer admin(s): We are a collective of 25-45 yo coastal media elites and we post music images only.
What was your entryway into becoming a music obsessive?
OLDHEAD: The mid-to-late 90s Midwestern hardcore punk scene. Lots of screamo, thrashy hardcore stuff, and early metalcore. Going to lots of shows, playing in bands, collecting records and posting on forums (rip vivalavinyl).
C: My dad taking me to Guitar Center or Tower Records every other weekend and letting me go insane in there was the foundation ... MySpace and LimeWire really sealed the deal tho.
Part time punk admin: I had a buddy in junior high with a cousin that played in some local bands who put us on to a bunch of garage, punk, post-punk, and shoegaze stuff. We became pretty competitive about showing each other music we’d “discovered” and I’ve never stopped digging. MySpace was my first exposure to contemporary underground and local music.
Could you describe your taste and listening habits?
OLDHEAD: I love hardcore punk (not so much beatdown although some of it is good) and a lot of electronic stuff. Lots of UK garage/2-step, first wave dubstep/modern deep dubstep, jungle. Dungeon synth, too
C: Screamo, emoviolence, sass, crazy mathy shit, indie rock, SoundCloud-era footwork, Blue Man Group, gospel music.
Part time punk admin: Total Control’s Henge Beat was the best record of the previous decade and nothing has topped it in 15 years. I’m about to listen to Prefab Sprout’s masterpiece Jordan: The Comeback again. If you don’t like Thin Lizzy, fuck you.
Jazz admin: Bebop, hard bop, post-bop, free jazz, cosmic jazz, soul jazz, spiritual jazz, swing, hot jazz, cool jazz, jazz-funk, jazz punk, acid jazz, jazz fusion, etc.
What is your preferred way to surf around the internet and look for new music?
OLDHEAD: Social media, YouTube channels, buying records/tapes blind. Still go to shows and find new bands that way.
C: Social media, YouTube, and just looking up other acts on a bill a band/artist I fw is on.
Part time punk admin: I like to look at musicians’ names on Discogs and see what other bands they’ve played in. I used to lurk TermBo pretty obsessively and owe a lot to long defunct blogs that would post hard-to-find albums for download via mediafire or megaupload. Shouts out to Jimmy, Harakiri Diat, Johnny Sick, zomeeggs, PKPurvis and SixtiesGarageTube on YouTube. I dig @u2_is_a_government_drone on IG.
What is your current favorite music meme?
OLDHEAD: Everything musicellectuals posts :).
C: Idk but our comment sections have some seriously special minds dropping gems everyday. That’s what’s been making me laugh the most lately. And John Lemon.
John Lemon: you just got John lemoned.
Jazz admin: Premium ad-free jazz.
What is the funniest genre of music?
OLDHEAD: Music is serious and for serious people.
C: Soundclown forever.
Door guy admin: Your local music scene.
Is there a release on your Nina hub that is particularly close to your heart?
OLDHEAD: Good band.
C: Cash Only Tony’s and Crochet. Love those bands.
Part time punk admin: I discovered Some Exercise’s ACME TRAP via Nina and it turned out to be one of my favorite records this year. Blessed to have Blank Hellscape, Nick Normal, Good Flying Birds, and TAKAAT on here too.
What excited you the most about music in 2025?
OLDHEAD: Relapse repressing Lipcream.
C: Might be So-Cal math scene.
Part time punk admin: The death of egg punk.
Door guy admin: Your local music scene.
