Lillie West of Lala Lala has lived in many places: Los Angeles, Chicago, Iceland, New Mexico, England. For this edition of Best Songs, we asked her about a few of those spots, and some of the music that she associates with them. As we expected, her choices are immaculate; they make us think that Dean Blunt and Kim Deal might be able to make some special music together. The artist’s fifth LP, Heaven 2, arrives via Sub Pop on February 27th.

Best song to listen to while riding a very long distance in a car?

“Reel E” by Water Damage 

Driving music to me is also running music … For both, I like repetitive songs that skirt the line of being punishing … I saw Water Damage in Austin this year and it was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen.

Best song that a friend of yours made over the past few years?

“Wherever You Are Tonight” by Accessory 

Jason is in a popular band called DEHD, which I also love, but I am a diehard fan of his solo project Accessory. We’ve known each other a while … The first tour I ever went on was when I was 20 with his old band Ne-Hi and Emily (also from DEHD)’s band Supermagical. Changed my life forever. I love Accessory.

Best song that makes you want to be back in England?

“Suspended In Gaffa” by Kate Bush

When I was growing up my mum would often blast Kate Bush. Her favorite song was the classic “Wuthering Heights” but this one really does it for me … I will forever associate Kate Bush with her and England.

Best song that makes you feel happy you are not in England?

“The Narcissist” by Dean Blunt (Feat. Inga Copeland) 

I love this song but something about it has an essence of depressing English grey nothingness…

Best song to put on when you are tired at work?

“Cannonball” by The Breeders

Best song that you wish you wrote?

“Meetin’ You” by Matt Champion 

This song is so beautiful and romantic to me—the lyrics really get me—“I swear I could pick you out from a thousand miles, easy,” “I love you until next life” … I also love the production. It was produced by Henry Kwapis and everything he touches kind of turns to gold in my opinion … This whole record was influential on my album.

Best song that reminds you of living in Iceland?

“HLAUPTU (feat. Hatari)” by CYBER

My Icelandic besties Jo and Salka are in this band called CYBER … When I was there they would always play live around and I miss seeing them so much. This one was really hard to choose. I sort of can’t actually listen to Múm or Sigur Ros without getting too nostalgic … That music is sooo Icelandic. Also my friend Sindri (sin fang).

Best song to listen to while you are drinking your morning beverage of choice?

“As Much as Possible” by Bing & Ruth

I LOVE morning music ... I could list off my favorites ... This is just one of my favorites from my “morning” playlist. This was another one that was very hard to choose.

Best song to calm you down when you are feeling overwhelmed?

“Lugu Lugu Kan-Ibi” by David Darling & The Wulu Bunun

This whole album is very relaxing and life affirming. Groups of people singing together is very moving to me. 

Best song to rev you up when you are feeling bored?

“Wannabe” by Spice Girls 

There was a period of time where I was so intensely depressed the only music that didn’t actively make me miserable was The Spice Girls. I listened to only the Spice Girls for maybe a month straight. I feel no sadness when I hear this song. I’m like … ready to clean my house … life is good.
